The Grader's Ring

Golden South Sea pearls run from a pale champagne to a saturated honey, and the price climbs steeply with the saturation. This one sits near the deep end without tipping into the orange cast that comes from dyeing. The colour is the oyster's; the gold-lipped variety of the same species that makes the white ones.
Set on a plain 2mm platinum band with a single 0.06 carat brilliant beside the pearl — enough to catch the eye moving past, not enough to argue with it.
It was named for the ring Elin wore at the grading bench for six years, which was a much worse pearl on a much worse band.

Kimberley coast, Western Australia — Pinctada maxima — silver-lipped oyster. The Kimberley runs one of the largest tides on earth — up to eleven metres twice a day. That water moves an enormous amount of food past a stationary oyster, which is why the shells here grow so large and lay down nacre so quickly.
