Kimberley Drops

White South Sea · Tallon Reef, Kimberley coast, Western Australia · lifted 2023 · graded New York

Two drop-shaped pearls from the same Kimberley harvest as the strand, matched over eight months of sorting. Drops are harder to pair than rounds — the profile has to agree as well as the colour — and a close pair is worth more than two better individual pearls.

The hooks are brushed 18k yellow gold, deliberately plain. A pearl this size does not need anything competing with it, and a satin finish keeps the metal from throwing a hard highlight next to the soft one on the pearl.

They hang about 28mm below the earlobe and weigh under four grams the pair.

Where it came from

Tallon Reef

Kimberley coast, Western Australia — Pinctada maxima — silver-lipped oyster. The Kimberley runs one of the largest tides on earth — up to eleven metres twice a day. That water moves an enormous amount of food past a stationary oyster, which is why the shells here grow so large and lay down nacre so quickly.
